WINTER HANDS-ON HORSEMANSHIP

Unmounted HorseSense Learning Levels

No riding. No pressure.  Just real horse skills, real confidence, and real connection.

This winter, step into the barn and discover what it truly means to understand horses—from the ground up.

Our Winter Hands-On Horsemanship: Unmounted HorseSense Levels program is the perfect way for kids, teens, and adults to build a strong foundation before climbing into the saddle this spring.

Whether you’re brand new to horses or want to deepen your horsemanship skills, this program meets you where you are—boots on the ground, hands on the horse, and learning that sticks.

Horses In Snow

Why Unmounted Horsemanship Matters

Man and Child Outdoors

(And why the best riders always start here)

Great riding doesn’t start in the saddle—it starts on the ground.

In this program, participants will:

  • Learn safe, confident horse handling including leading, grooming, and tacking

  • Understand horse behavior and body language, so horses make sense instead of feeling unpredictable

  • Build trust, respect, and calm confidence through hands-on interaction

  • Develop real horsemanship skills that carry into riding, ownership, and everyday horse care

  • Create a strong foundation so transitioning into mounted lessons in spring feels natural and stress-free

This is where confidence grows—and where nervous beginners turn into capable, horse-smart humans

What Are The Unmounted & Mounted
HorseSense
 Learning Levels

At Lucky Break Ranch, we use HorseSense Learning Levels in both our unmounted and mounted programs to help students build confidence, safety, and understanding with horses — step by step.

HorseSense Learning Levels focus on learning from the ground up, creating well-rounded horse people who understand how horses think, move, and communicate, not just how to ride.

 Unmounted HorseSense Learning Levels

Learning From the Ground Up

Our unmounted programs focus on hands-on horsemanship skills that build a strong foundation with horses.

Students will learn:

  • Safe handling, leading, and tying

  • Grooming and everyday horse care

  • Tack identification and proper use

  • Understanding horse behavior and body language

  • Barn safety and routines

These skills build confidence, awareness, and trust — and prepare students for mounted riding when the time is right. Unmounted learning is especially valuable during the winter months.

 Mounted HorseSense Learning Levels

Taking Skills Into the Saddle

Our mounted programs build directly on the unmounted foundation, helping riders feel confident, prepared, and connected.

Students will learn:

  • Safe mounting and dismounting

  • Balanced position and clear communication

  • Arena safety and riding etiquette

  • Progressive riding skills based on their level

Because students understand horses on the ground first, riding becomes calmer, safer, and more enjoyable for both horse and rider.

 How the Learning Levels Work

HorseSense Learning Levels are progress-based, not time-based.

  • Each level includes clear skills to work on

  • Skills are practiced during lessons with instructor support

  • When a skill is shown confidently and safely, it is signed off

  • Students move forward at their own pace

This approach allows everyone to learn comfortably while building real understanding.

 How the Ribbons Work

As students complete each HorseSense Learning Level, they earn a HorseSense ribbon.

Ribbons are:

  • A celebration of progress and effort

  • A fun and meaningful goal for students

  • A reminder of the skills and confidence gained

Ribbons are earned through demonstrated skills, not speed. Every student’s journey is unique.

Why We Use HorseSense Learning Levels

We’ve chosen HorseSense Learning Levels for both unmounted and mounted programs because they support the kind of learning we believe in.

  •  Safety always comes first

  •  Clear goals build confidence

  •  Strong foundations create better riders

  •  Learning can continue year-round

  •  Horses and humans benefit from better understanding

Start on the Ground. Grow in the Saddle.

Whether you begin with unmounted winter learning or continue into mounted programs, HorseSense Learning Levels provide a clear, supportive path forward — with ribbons that represent real skills, confidence, and connection.
